TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine)

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is a medical system that has been used in China to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness in animals for thousands of years. It is adapted from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which has been used to treat humans in China and around the world for thousands of years.

TCVM therapies- including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and food therapy (see below) are generally non-invasive and well-tolerated. A treatment protocol in TCVM involves using tongue and pulse diagnosis as well as a full physical examination of each patient to generate a pattern diagnosis. Other factors that are taken into account when developing a pattern diagnosis are the temperament, age, sex, activity and environment of the animal. This pattern diagnosis then guides which therapies are performed. The ultimate goal is to achieve balance in the body. In other words, therapies are customized to the individual patient.

TCVM is also a wonderful, complementary therapy to Western Veterinary Medicine. Using the two together is a practice called “integrative veterinary medicine.”

  • Acupuncture is a treatment that involves the stimulation of acupoints, typically achieved through the insertion of specialized needles into the body. Acupuncture points lie along the body’s Meridian Channels along which Qi flows. Stimulating particular acupoints can reestablish balance and harmony in the body systems as well as lead to pain relief, stress reduction, and improve overall well being.

Acupuncture is very beneficial at managing chronic pain conditions such as osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. It can also help other chronic conditions such as allergies, endocrinopathies, chronic renal, liver, and cardiac conditions, and behavioral disorders. And many more!

  • Herbal Medicine utilizes herbal ingredients to treat particular disease patterns and restore balance. Many of these herbs and herbal combinations have been used for thousands of years by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. Most herbs are generally well-tolerated, but should only be used under the supervision of a skilled practitioner.

Herbs and herbal formulas are typically given orally in capsule or pill form, or can be administered as a powder in food.

  • Food Therapy is the use of diet to treat and prevent imbalance within the body. It utilizes knowledge of the energetics of food ingredients to treat a particular pattern diagnosis in an individual.
